Danielle Shelton, MM, MT-BC, NICU-MT, CEDCAT
Danielle is a Certified Eating Disorder Creative Arts Therapist and Board Certified Music Therapist. In 2013, she developed BLS in efforts to provide a comprehensive and collaborative approach amongst outpatient providers in order to help those struggling with eating disorders pursue a full recovery. Along the journey, BLS expanded to offer similar services to people struggling with other types of mental health illness as well. Danielle not only provides direct Music Therapy services at BLS for all ages, she also coordinates care to ensure each client's needs are met, provides education and support tools to clients and their families, and organizes treatment team meetings and all scheduling for the IOP and PHP eating disorder programs at BLS. Danielle believes that the overall mission of BLS is to help each person develop an individual treatment plan to achieve wellness and balance in their life. Each provider on the BLS team is licensed in the state of Florida, participates regularly in continuing education opportunities, and upholds their own specialized certifications in order to provide our clients with the utmost professional and quality care. Prior to the establishment of BLS, Danielle served as the Clinical Director and Quality Assurance Coordinator of a full residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient program for treatment of eating disorders.
Mindi Rojas, MS, ATR-BC
Mindi is a Board Certified Registered Art Therapist currently providing art therapy in private practice. She serves as Chair of the Registration Standards Committee for the ATCB. She received a master’s degree in art therapy from The Florida State University in 2005. Over the past 10 years, Mindi has provided clinical art therapy services in the areas of psychiatric mental and behavioral health, substance abuse, trauma, anticipatory grief, and bereavement. Currently, she also provides supervision to professional art therapists working to attain the ATR-BC certification. At BLS, Mindi offers individual, family, and group art therapy sessions for adolescents and adults.
Jennifer Murphy, RD, LD/N
Jennifer is a Registered Dietitian who focuses her practice in recovery from eating disorders, nutrition education, chronic disease prevention, weight management, and health promotion. Jennifer strives to educate, empower, and encourage clients and patients to make sustainable lifestyle changes, rather than employing short-term measures. Jennifer earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Food and Nutrition Science from The Florida State University with a concentration in Dietetics. Since 2005, Jennifer has provided nutrition education and counseling to numerous clients of all ages. Through her nutrition approach, Jennifer believes she promotes healthy relationships with food, prevention of disease, resolutions of chronic disease, and encouragement of the principles of intuitive eating and balanced intake.
Christy Merritt, RD
Christy is a Registered Dietitian who worked for three years as the RD in a well established eating disorder facility. She provided care for clients suffering from EDs in residential, PHP, and IOP settings. She also facilitated equine therapy for four years, and has extensive experience with horses. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Food and Nutrition Science with a concentration in Dietetics in 2012. She then completed her internship through Keiser Univeristy in Lakeland, Florida. Christy completed her clinical, food service, community internship rotations in Orlando at various nursing homes and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. At Second Harvest, she implemented a food ranking system and provided nutrition education and nutrition games to schools and boys and girls clubs in the community. Christy believes in a complete ED recovery and strives to share her passion of nutrition and eating disorder recovery to empower others to make positive changes in their lives.
Nari Jeter, PhD, MFT
Dr. Jeter earned her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Drexel University, and her Doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University. She has two main passions with her work, including individual and family therapy with clients recovering from an eating disorder, and couples/marital therapy. Dr. Jeter has worked as a therapist at various agencies in the Tallahassee community, and has over 10 years of experience in the mental health profession. Dr. Jeter has also served as a Partial Hospitalization Program coordinator at an established eating disorder treatment facility for male and female clients of all ages. She strongly believes that family relationships are one of the greatest joys in life. Therefore, family support is critical through the learning and healing process of treatment.
Karen Gibbons, LMHC
Karen has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Asbury University and her Master’s degree from Georgia State University in Community Counseling. A licensed mental health counselor for 25 years, Karen offers expertise in her field. Karen has work experience with an extensive population. This includes: training at a crisis pregnancy center, counseling emotionally handicapped children in schools, leading a church ministry, and counseling those struggling with eating disorders in a residential and partial hospitalization treatment center. Karen assists people to hear their own hearts as well as the heart of God in various times of their life to find peace.
Amanda Capece, LMHC, M.S., Ed.S.
Amanda joined Better Living Solutions, LLC in 2015 to provide counseling and support to promote recovery for clients with eating disorders. She uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), to help ensure mental health soundness. Amanda has worked with clients with mental illness, eating disorders and substance abuse concerns for the past 6 years. Amanda obtained her Master’s and Education Specialist’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. She interned with the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Behavioral Health Center, providing crisis intervention counseling with adolescents, who suffered from a variety of mental illnesses, including but not limited to, suicidality, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and eating disorders. Currently, Amanda's days are spent at Tallahassee Memorial Behavioral Health Center, where she provides crisis intervention counseling.
Nicole Troelstrup, LMHC
Nicole is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida. Nicole earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Florida State University and went on to complete her Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling at Nova Southeastern University. For the past five years, Nicole has been providing individual, as well a group, counseling services in a variety of settings. Nicole’s experience ranges from working with incarcerated females while completing her internship at Gadsden Correction Facility, to providing substance abuse services and competency restoration for patient’s court ordered to treatment at Florida State Hospital. She has also served both adolescent and adult clients, who suffer from mental illnesses, by providing crisis intervention services in the Access Center at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Behavioral Health Center.
Angela Chatfield, LCSW
Angela is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with both an undergraduate degree and Master of Social Work from Florida State University. She has experience working in various mental health settings, including adoption, inpatient crisis stabilization and with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. She has been with BLS since January of 2017. She is experienced in several theoretical approaches including CBT, DBT, narrative, mindful-based and family systems. She chooses, with each client, which approach to take based on their individuals needs.
Michael Fitzgerald, MFT
Mike is a 3rd year doctoral student at Florida State's Marriage and Family Therapy program. He attended Oklahoma State for his undergraduate degree and Syracuse University for his master's in MFT. He specializes in the treatment of childhood trauma, domestic or intimate partner violence, and sexual assault in individual, couple and family therapy contexts. Mike is also particularly interested how abusive experiences shape disordered eating and body image. Mike is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) and frequently utilizes those approaches in his clinical practice. These therapeutic approaches emphasize a client centered approach rooted in collaboration and respect.
Kelly Holden, MT-BC
Kelly is a Board Certified Music Therapist, providing her services for BLS as well as at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. Kelly is a recent graduate of Florida State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy. Kelly uses music as her tool to reach non-musical goals that are individualized for each of her clients. She participated in clinical work with BLS during her undergraduate time at Florida State and developed a passion for counseling, while those who struggle with eating disorders are close to her heart. Kelly completed her internship in Music Therapy with Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, where she continued to develop skills in aiding patients to identify healthy ways to cope with traumatic, life-altering events. Kelly uses a cognitive behavioral approach to Music Therapy and offers many ways for her clients to work towards developing a healthier lifestyle, mentally, physically and emotionally.
Tom Provides advisory, operational and risk management support services to the BLS team that focuses on improving business performance and efficiency and assisting the owners in meeting business and personal goals of strategic importance including: financial assessment and cash flow analysis for financial stability; business performance and credit worthiness; and, structured strategic planning to help identify and develop targeted solutions for current business concerns and future growth. He offers private consulting services outside of BLS through TAP Independent Consulting, LLC.
Denise has been a wonderful asset to the BLS team. She is the initial point of contact for our clients. Denise will assist you through the intake process, coordinate your scheduling preferences, and manage all billing and insurance matters. We are grateful for her warm and genuine spirit!
Cooking has always been in the picture for Loren ever since she can remember. That passion and love of food landed her at Johnson & Wales University where she earned an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts and furthered her education with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Culinary Nutrition. Her role at BLS is to empower clients with confidence in the kitchen and to help them learn how to make wholesome foods that they are proud of. She plans to continue her nutrition education at FSU in the fall in order to earn her M.S in Nutrition Education and Health Promotion in order to become a Registered Dietitian.
Brandi is a mental health counseling intern working toward her combined Master's and Ed.S. degree at Florida State University. She received her Bachelor's degree in psychology from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 2016. She has previous experience providing case management in a chemical dependency unit and works from a person-centered theoretical orientation.
